Custom Workshops
This workshop is for individuals and groups who want a custom private experience that is different than my usual workshop. Read on to learn more!
What: Nature painting with museum exhibited artist! Hi, I’m Joy and I would love to share the process I invented to make the paintings I show in galleries and museums. Many people do private workshops with me when you want to make a bigger painting for your house. This includes families who come in or individuals. I also work with individuals who want to try out a new material or subject matter and develop a process that is unique to them. I have also worked with other artists who need help to break out of their usual way of making to have fun making again. For example, I worked with a collage artist who wanted to start painting her own paper to use in her collages. We spent 3 hours and I showed her several ways to achieve her objective and she ended up using what she learned to make several pieces that she showed in an amazing gallery exhibition. I have also worked with older women who wanted to start making art in their home, but didn’t know where to start. We played with many materials and I helped them figure out how they could make art at home without a big cost or space commitment.
If you would like to learn my most popular process you will make colorful puddles, put leaves, flowers, and other materials in the puddles, and then let them evaporate. The next day you get to peel some of the materials off and see the details left behind from the veins of the leaves, the flower petals, and all the other materials you will get to experiment with!
If you are interested in developing a process that is unique to you I am happy to help you get comfortable using almost any art material. I have experience with resin, watercolors, oils, acrylics. I am also skilled at creating photorealistic paintings and drawings and can help guide you in whatever other subject matter and material. I taught at the University of Michigan during grad school and helped students while they created a body of work to be shown in their thesis shows. If I am not comfortable with a medium or subject matter I can probably find another awesome artist who is!

TESTIMONIALS
“I helped organize a color flow workshop with Jessica Joy London for my team at work. It was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to spend time with my colleagues out of work in a unique setting. I loved seeing what everyone created and some of us even hung it up in the office after!”
-Ross from Azavea
“Jessica-You are such a light and a JOY! We had so much fun “meditating” and relaxing and creating with you.“
-Michelle from Bloom Daily Planners
About my Process
I created this process which I call a colorful meditation process to help me with my own wellbeing and joy. The playful yet relaxing process of watching the puddles of color flow and move around on the paper pulls the participant out of the worrisome future and into the present to a place where they are free to explore without expectations. The process is grounding and at the same time lifts the worries of everyday life. I also do not use brushes in this process because I find that a brush introduces expectations of knowing what you want to create before you create it. I have spoken to so many people who have told me that they want to make art, but they just don't know what to make. My process alleviates that stress because it promotes playful experimentation that many haven't been able to do since they were a kid.
I love doing these workshops as a large group because we will all be jumping into the unknown together. I have also done large pieces in my studio with 47 kids working on one giant piece and it is so wonderful to see what many can create together when they let go. Letting go is the key to creating successful outcomes, and I tell my participants that the more you let go, the more possibilities will present themselves to you and the better the painting will turn out! I also say, "if you can spill milk you can create a beautiful piece of art with Project Joy" to help everybody know that they can do this so nobody gives up before they start!
