Artist Statement
Jessica Joy London’s work unearths the wonders hidden in the everyday. In the grocery store, she rifles through the onions collecting onion skin. On walks, she collects trash and weeds from the sidewalks of her South Philadelphia neighborhood. Everything she sees is fair game to be included in experiments on her hydrophobic science lab-like surfaces. Each experiment is a collaboration with natural phenomena: surface tension, evaporation, dispersion.
In her studio, like the lab she spent time in in graduate school, she uses acrylic ink to make normally invisible interactions visible, providing a deeper understanding of the beauty and complexity of everyday phenomena. Michelle Grabner described her paintings as “contemporary photographs” because of her unique alchemical process and the resulting photographic details of her finished pieces.
